Frédéric Dard est connu pour son style d’une inimitable drôlerie et pour la richesse de son inspiration. Il est moins habituel de le voir prendre la plume d’un auteur de théâtre noir.
Avec Baby-Meurtre , il saisit le lecteur à la gorge et l’entraîne dans une cruelle histoire se déroulant dans un quartier morose de New-York.
Là, vit Nora, la pathétique mère d’Éric, un adolescent caractériel. Leur existence n’est pas drôle dans leur petit appartement de la 10e Rue ; mais le jour où un peintre en bâtiment vient en repeindre la façade, les choses tournent à l’horreur. Surtout lorsque se profile l’inquiétante silhouette de Thomas Waring, leur voisin diabolique.
L’intervention d’une jeune fille au cœur généreux donne une teinte chaplinesque à cette aventure tragique.
Frédéric Dard sait distiller l’angoisse de la première à la dernière réplique.
Baby-Meurtre est une sorte de cauchemar au ralenti, une lente descente aux enfers à la suite de l’innocence apparente qu’habitent des pulsions atroces.
