✦ Synopsis
Con ference reports
Derouane et al. (Namur) reported briefly on the interaction of ethylene with H-ZSM-5 using 13C n.m.r, and thermogravimetry. In the absence of water it was found that ethylene is strongly chemisorbed even below room temperature, and oligomerizes rapidly at 293 K or higher. At 573 K, the polymer cracks to paraffins and, at the same temperature, in the presence of steam, olefins are formed in addition. If water is adsorbed prior to ethylene at room temperature, and the temperature then increased to 593 K, paraffins, olefins and aromatics are formed. The data was taken to indicate that a surface ethyl species is formed in the H-ZSM-5 catalysed conversion of methanol (or ethylene) to hydrocarbons.
