We have studied numerically the evolution and decay of axion strings. These global defects decay mainly by axion emission and thus contribute to the cosmological axion energy density. The relative importance of this source relative to misalignment production of axions depends on the spectrum. Radiat

โฆ Synopsis
We discuss the decay of axion walls bounded by strings and present numerical simulations of the decay process. In these simulations, the decay happens immediately, in a time scale of order the light travel time, and the average energy of the radiated axions is (wa) -~ 7ma for v~,/rna ~-500. (w~) is found to increase approximately linearly with ln(v~,/m,~). Extrapolation of this behaviour yields <w~) -~ 60ma in axion models of interest.

The axion decay a -~ e+e -via a plasmon is investigated in an external magnetic field. The results we have obtained demonstrate a strong catalyzing influence of the field as the axion lifetime in the magnetic field of order 1015G and at temperature of order IOMeV is reduced to 104sec.
