β¦ Synopsis
We review the mathematical description of axial propagation in inhomogeneous dielectrics, focusing on two canonical examples: scalar Bragg gratings and thin film helicoidal bianisotropic media (TFHBM). Coupled wave analysis is reviewed for the former, and exact methods based on rotational transforms are discussed for the latter. There are many similarities between the physical descriptions that axe emphasised in reviewing the modelling techniques, although the transform which allows the TFHBM case to be solved exactly is shown to be inapplicable in the scalar case. ## Abstract A method for the timeβdomain simulation of electromagnetic wave propagation in twoβlevel dielectric media is developed. The technique involves using transmissionβline modelling (TLM) and π΅βtransform methods to develop an algorithm to simulate the MaxwellβBloch equations. The approach is
The responses of a plane-wave pulse train irradiating a lossy dispersive dielectric half-space are investigated. The incident pulse train is expressed as a Fourier series with summing done by the inverse fast Fourier transform. The Fourier series technique is adopted to avoid the many difficulties o
