He received his BS degree in chemistry from The Florida State University in 1971 . He then worked at the Verona Division of the Baychem Corporation (now Miles, Inc.), Charleston, SC, before beginning graduate studies in 1972 at the University of Florida under the direction of J. D. Winefordner.
