✦ Synopsis

Avery's paper on the bacterial transforming principle appeared in 1944. Unfortunately, Avery's contribution appeared at a time when the focus was more on rehabilitation of war victims, war veterans and disease prevention on a global scale. The majority of the Nobel awards in medicine for a decade following 1944 were given to the discoveries which were thought to bring benefits to the suffering human population that had survived two world wars within three decades. Certainly, with the formation of the W.H.O. and other international agencies at the end of the war, I feel that the 'mortals composing
