Avery's paper on the bacterial transforming principle appeared in 1944. Unfortunately, Avery's contribution appeared at a time when the focus was more on rehabilitation of war victims, war veterans and disease prevention on a global scale. The majority of the Nobel awards in medicine for a decade following 1944 were given to the discoveries which were thought to bring benefits to the suffering human population that had survived two world wars within three decades.
