โฆ Synopsis
In the course of our work with the National Research Register for Hereditary Hearing Loss (Register), we were interested in determining which geneticists could provide services to a deaf person. Therefore, we purchased a set of mailing labels from the American Board of Medical Genetics to conduct a survey of genetic services available to the deaf.
The Register is designed to identify families with hereditary deafness and to collect medical, audiological, and genetic information about the family either to document the diagnosis, if one exists, or to categorize the type of deafness in the family. In collecting this information, we have been asked by relatives for recurrence risks for their particular circumstances. The results of this survey will better help us to make appropriate referrals.
Methods
In November 1988,1,132 survery cards were mailed to ABMG-certified clinical geneticists, medical geneticists, and genetic counselors residing in the United States and Canada. The survey asked four questions.
