✦ Synopsis

Application. A preplant root dip in hygroscopic gel did not influence ponderosa pine or hackberry seedhng survival or growth in the greenhouse. The incorporation of auxins in the preplant gel dip did improve seedling growth and survival. The growth of hackberry seedlings in the field, however, was inhibited by gel dip minus auxin supplements. Test results indicate that a root dip in a hygroscopic starch gel polymer (e.g., WaterLock Superabsorbant Polymer B-204) containing 300 ppm IBA can improve survival and growth of bareroot ponderosa pine seedlings in the field.
