✦ Synopsis

A high rate of Celt growth in cutture has often been thought to be indicative of malignancy. In the present work the generation time of six murine cell lines and the duration of their various mitotic and intermitotic phases were studied using thymidine-~i-~H and autoradiography. No definite covrelation could be established between the growth kinetics and the tumor-producing capacity of these cells, but cultures which were more than one year old showed a slightly shorter generation time and a somewhat shorter phase of D N A synthesis ( t s ) than 6to 8-month-old cultures.

The effect of the phorbol ester tumor promoter 12-0-tetradecanoylphorbol 13acctatc (TF'A) on cell invasion was studied using an in vitro assay for cell invasion through a reconstituted basement membrane matrix (Matrigel). TPA inhibited the invasiveness of malignant human fibrosarcoma HTI 080 cells.
