✦ Synopsis
A device for automation of both the simple and the differential magnetic diver balance is described. By using a mechanically chopped laser beam and doublebeam system, a large proportional sensitivity of the controller and considerable stability over a relatively long period of time were attained. The inherent sensitivity of the balance was retained and automatic measurements for several days were made possible. The applicability of the device was tested on a differential magnetic diver balance by measuring the change in reduced #veight during a histochemical reaction and by measuring oscillations in the oxygen uptake and release of green algae induced by light or light deprivation.
