✦ Synopsis
This article describes a method of measurement of superconductor critical currents using economical d.c. instruments controlled by a personal computer through the IEEE-488 interface. To further reduce the cost, the instruments have been replaced by custom-made electronics and the IEEE-488 card by an A/D, D/A and multi I/0 card. The role of the computer, apart from data acquisition, has been expanded to control the temperature of the sample. The temperature range can cover 10-450K using a diode sensor with resolution 0.1 K and accuracy +0.5 K. The current range can cover 1 #A-1A with resolution of 0.5/~A and accuracy -t-0.5 HA. Time consuming critical current and resistance measurements can therefore be made economically, efficiently and with minimum human intervention without sacrificing accuracy.
