✦ Synopsis

In recent years there has been considerable interest in a membranebound (Na+ + K+) -activated, ouabain-inhibitable adenosinetriphosphatase (ATPase) which appears to be related to the coupled transport of Na+ and K+ (see review by Skou ( 1) ). Although this enzyme is generally assayed in membrane suspensions, we recently succeeded in solubilizing it under conditions in which it remains stable for reasonably long periods (2). This has enabled us to develop for this enzyme an automatic assay that should be of great value in the assay of large numbers of samples, particularly in purification with columns.
