Environmental factors and involvement of facial nuclei and other brainstem sites in known medical conditions associated with autism are admirably presented. Prenatal exposure to alcohol and other drugs can produce variants of Wernicke's encephalopathy, or Wernicke-like patterns of bilaterally symmetric brainstem lesions, with craniofacial anomalies.
