✦ Synopsis

Freedonia forecasts 4%/y growth in world carbon black demand

Earlier this year, Notch Consulting published its forecasts for world carbon black supply and demand. They showed global consumption increasing at an average rate of 3.5% per annum onwards from 2003, reaching 10.1 M tonnes by 2010. Assuming straight-line growth, this would mean global consumption reaching 9.43 M tonnes in 2008. (See 'Focus on Pigments', Jun 2005, 4). According to Freedonia (consultants based in Cleveland, OH), world carbon black consumption is forecast to increase at 4% per annum, more or less in line with the envisaged growth in world rubber consumption. Freedonia forecasts world consumption at 9.6 M tonnes by 2008, of which Asia/Pacific 45%, North America 20%, Western Europe 17% and other regions (notably South America, Eastern Europe and the Middle East) 18%.
