Après avoir grandi San Francisco auprès d'un grand-père millionnaire et excentrique, Audrey aurait pu, comme la plupart des femmes de son époque, se contenter d'un mariage réussi. Mais elle a la passion des voyages.
En 1933, alors qu'elle a vingt-six ans, elle s'embarque seule pour l'Europe. C'est au cap d'Antibes qu elle rencontre le célèbre écrivain et explorateur Charles Parker-Scott. Son voyage d'agrément se transforme alors en véritable périple et la conduit .eux confins de la Chine. Mais les événements mondiaux s'en mêlent soudain : le japon vient d'attaquer la Chine. Charles rentre en Europe et Audrey, cause de son grand-père, refuse de l'épouser et retourne San Francisco. Commence alors un tumultueux chassé-croisé avec, pour toile de fond, la menace toujours plus proche de la Seconde Guerre mondiale.
