Synthetic Thyroxln.--Thyroxin is the hormone, or specific secretion, of the thyroid gland. It governs the basal metabolism or basal heat production of the animal body. Harrington and Barger (Biochemical J., 1927, 2z, 169-181) have synthesized thyroxin and determined its constitution. They report that thyroxin is beta-J3 : 5-diiodo-4-(3' : 5'-diiodo-4' hydroxyphenoxyl) phenyl]-alpha-aminopropionic acid. J.S.H.
