FIG. 1. Variation of fracture-surface energy with grain size for ductil+brittle fractures. These values have approximately the right order of magnitude for the particular case of iron. This analysis indicates that one cannot improve the fracture resistance of materials indefinitely by simply decreasing their grain sizes. A point of diminishing returns exists; probably at a grain size of about 1 ,U for typical materials. In completely brittle substances, grain size should have little effect on fracture resistance. In the cases where such effects have been reported, the effects have probably been caused by impurities that have been segregated at the grain boundaries.
