The response of a single-degree-of-freedom system with dry friction under a constant velocity of the base and/or harmonic driving force is analyzed via either closed-form or numerical approaches. The "rst main purpose of this paper is to investigate the in#uence of the base speed on the system resp

✦ Synopsis
A single-degree-of-freedom damped oscillator excited by dry friction forces of unknown exact characteristics is considered. Asymptotic behaviour of the oscillator has been studied by using the method of optimal Lyapunov functions. Optimal estimates of the limit region have been obtained for various bounding functions. Four illustrative examples of Lyapunov function optimization and parameter modi®cation are given.
