We investigate the orbital evolution of 10 13 -to 10 25 -g planetesimals near 1 AU and in the asteroid belt (near 2.6 AU) prior to the stage of evolution when the mutual perturbations between the planetesimals become important. We include nebular gas drag and the effects of Jupiter and Saturn at the

✦ Synopsis
The restricted three-body dynamics of the asteroid-planet-Sun system in the heliocentric frame is generalized to include the action of an existing massive planetary satellite. The introduction of a planetary satellite allows the asteroid to change both its angular momentum and its energy with respect to the planet through scattering by the satellite. The asteroid-satellite scattering, therefore, breaks the capture/escape constraint within the framework of three-body interactions and makes permanent capture of asteroids feasible.
