โœฆ Synopsis

Software is becoming an extensive part of a complex automated system 1 (Fig. 14.1). In conducting system hazard analysis, the entire system must be evaluated considering the complex human, sophisticated hardware designs, and microelectronics providing the firmware interface between hardware and software machine instruction. Because of these complexities, special knowledge and experience are required in human engineering, hardware and material engineering, and software engineering. Specialty engineers in human and software reliability, computer engineering, quality assurance, maintainability, and logistics are also needed to concurrently develop a successful complex system design. To keep up with these disciplines, system safety specialties have also evolved, specializing in hardware, software, and system analysis. 1 The concepts involving the system context that are discussed within this section have been presented in the following: M. Allocco, Computer and Software Safety Considerations in Support of System Hazard Analysis.
