At Eaton Truck Components, design assurance technologies are embedded early into the design, manufacturing, and service process. The company, a Kalamazoo, Michigan-based division of Eaton Corporation, designs and manufactures transmissions for the heavy-duty, medium-duty, and light-duty trucks, including hybrid electric vehicles (HEV).

The process begins at the Production Definition phase, where the key goals for each product are specified:

. System Reliability Goal-No mission-stopping failure during the expected life.

. System Safety Goal-No fatalities any time even beyond expected life.

. Maintainability Goal-Eliminate as much downtime as possible, by design.

. Logistics Engineering Goal-Improve serviceability and fault isolation capabilities.

. Human Factors Engineering Goal-Design to reduce the impact of driver errors.

. System Integration Goal-Aim for high Availability and smart diagnostics.
