✦ Synopsis
Livingstone Ltd. 35s. THIS book is devoted to an analysis of 253 cases of carcinoma of the bronchus with mediastinal obstruction. These cases were seen at the Royal Marsden Hospital between January, 1950, and June, 1961. The cases represented 11 per cent of the 2286 patients with carcinoma of the bronchus registered during that period.
Of these 253 cases with mediastinal obstruction, all but 3 were treated with radiotherapy.
An excellent chapter of this book is devoted to the anatomy of the superior mediastinum. The importance of the large veins is stressed and their obstruction by mediastinal growths is well illustrated by bilateral phlebograms. The basilic vein is used and 45 per cent hypaque injected through a polythene catheter. Excellent phlebograms illustrate this method. An attempt was made to deliver tumour doses greater than 3000rad in 3 to 4 weeks or their equivalent. With this form of treatment radiation oedema is rarely met with.
This book certainly adds considerably to our knowledge of lung cancer and its complications.
A complete analysis of the 253 cases is given in factual form.
