✦ Synopsis

Members of the Association of Molecular Pathology met in Denver, Colorado to discuss recent progress in molecular pathology and its applications in clinical research. The major topics discussed during the convention were related to the most recent ®ndings in genetic diseases, infectious diseases, hematopathologic disorders, and solid tumors. The possible applications of these ®ndings in diagnostic and prognostic tests were presented, with a particular emphasis on patent law and policies that could affect development of the new tests and their application.

In this report, we focused our attention on the ``Solid Tumor'' sessions moderated by Dr. Carlos Cordon-Cardo (New York, NY). In this section of the meeting, the topics discussed in workshops and plenary sessions were: (1) recent progress in the use of microarrays (T. Orntoft, Aarhus, Denmark), (2) in the use of anti HER-2/neu antibody in the treatment of human breast cancer (D.J. Slamon, Los Angeles, CA), and (3) in the detection of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) and micrometastases (R. Ghossein, New York, NY and R. Cote, Los Angeles, CA). The topics presented are discussed in this report with particular emphasis on the cooperation between basic research, diagnosis, and therapeutic innovations, that represents the most successful and productive approach to defeat cancer.
