✦ Synopsis

Summary

A 20‐year‐old man with a mild‐to‐moderate learning disability was presented to services with a history of engaging in auto‐erotic practices. A multidisciplinary assessment was conducted which demonstrated that the client understood the difference between appropriate and inappropriate sexual behaviour, but his ability to transfer this knowledge to real‐life situations was limited. An intervention was instigated that focused on developing a greater range of social opportunities for the client whilst simultaneously monitoring his potential to re‐engage in the dangerous sexual practices. This intervention has led to an overall decrease in the frequency and severity of the behaviour that has been maintained over time.
