โœฆ Synopsis

This meeting brought together a number of workers from fields which are traditionally widely separated. Through our common interests in the structure and assembly of biologically important objects we hoped to establish principles that would overcome inherent difficulties in communication. The model for this conference was the very successful program on the Control of Form in Cells organized in 1969 by Keith Porter, T. F. Anderson, P. Satir, and L. G . Tilney. Many of the same laboratories were represented at Squaw Valley, and the remarkable progress made in the last five years is evident in these reports. The major difference between the two meetings is the communication of the results of this one in the Journal o f Supramolecular Structure. This journal is an ideal vehicle for publication of these proceedings, since they fall directly within its intended scope. Many of the authors designed their contributions to present a short review in addition t o recent research. This should facilitate communication between workers in the different areas and increase the value of the articles for teaching purposes.

Fred Fox and especially Charlotte Miller and Fran Stusser for their untiring efforts in administering the meeting and assembling this publication.

This meeting was one of the series of 1974 ICN-UCLA Winter Conferences on Molecular and Cellular Biology, sponsored by the Life Sciences Division of ICN Pharmaceuticals, Inc., and organized through the Molecular Biology Institute of the
