✦ Synopsis

This paper deals with the special problems which arise in the design of the trays used in the distillation columns of a plant for recovering natural gas liquids and rejecting nitrogen from natural gas -a NGL-NRU plant. Process requirements dictate that the trays must operate efficiently over an extraordinarily wide operating range which can be as large as 20: 1. A novel bubble cap tray is described which incorporates several features to extend the range of efficient operation. Some of the key design considerations which must be taken into account are outlined.
