โฆ Synopsis
he benefits of natural gas as a fuel cannot be T disputed. It is clean-burning, efficient, and physically simple. It is also abundant in selective parts of the world. But it is lacking in others. The Asia-Pacific region represents this dichotomy: the southern portion of the region has an abundance of the resource, while the northern sector has none. Liquefied natural gas (LNG) provides a means of distributing natural gas. While LNG represents only about 2 percent of the world's energy demand, approximately onehalf of all LNG is produced in Indonesia and Malaysia, and nearly three-fourths is consumed in Pacific Rim markets. The region favors the use of natural gas primarily for electric power generation, although industrial, commercial, and residential use is growing. While Japan is the region's largest LNG consumer, Korea and Taipei are growing markets.
Asia-Pacific LNG Demand
Estimates by the Institute for Gas Technology (IGT) support the conclusion that present demand for LNG in the Asia-Pacific region emanates from three countries: Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan. Additional demand may originate from emerging markets in India, Thailand, and China over the next 10 to 15 years.
Japan
Japan accounts for almost 80 percent of the LNG presently exported within the Asia-Pacific region. In 1996, the country's demand was
