✦ Synopsis

Fuel Cells Bulletin 9 has to be maintained to ensure the required membrane hydration. This increases the complexity (and cost) of the fuel cell system and significantly reduces its overall efficiency, making PEMs unsuitable for small portable applications. In contrast, currently available SOFCs, although much more efficient, run at unsuitably high temperatures (about 800Β°C) for most portable applications. Using triazole-containing membranes could provide a solution to the temperature versus efficiency problem, eliminating the need for a water management system and dramatically simplifying the cooling system, Liu says.

Having pushed their polymer fuel cells to 120Β°C with triazole, the researchers are now seeking better polymers to increase operating temperatures even further.
