โœฆ Synopsis

This paper considers the effects of artificial viscosity for Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) computations. Results are presented for five different problems that each uses six different varieties of artificial viscosity. The results for some of the problems are significantly affected by the artificial viscosity.

Despite developments over the past 30 years, SPH and other mesh-free computational methods are not yet in general use as standard tools in dynamic structural mechanics. One possible reason for this is the use of features such as artificial viscosity, to stabilize the numerical computations, which ca

In this paper we present a new formulation of the artificial viscosity concept. Physical arguments for the origins of this term are given and a set of criteria that any proper functional form of the artificial viscosity should satisfy is enumerated. The first important property is that by definition

A new artificial viscosity (Q) model, based on physical conservation corrections for momentum, and a new artificial heat transfer (H ) formulation are developed for the analysis of one-dimensional compressible fluid transients in plane, cylindrical, and spherical geometries. The accuracy of these fo
