โœฆ Synopsis

By using an ionisation instrument which records every one or two minutes it is possible to follow the variation of intensity of a radiation. We found that variations of gamma radiation were followed without any delay. On the contrary the variation of the intensity of cosmic radiation, by changing the thickness of an iron shield, showed that there must be produced a radioactive substance with a time of decay, of 8,6 minutes. Also under thick layers there is formed another atom, which we think to be the product of neutrons.

Gamma-ray spectroscopy holds great promise for probing nucleosynthesis in individual stellar explosions via short-lived radioactivity, and for measuring current global Galactic nucleosynthesis with longer-lived radioactivity. The former case was realized first for a Type II supernova when both 56Co
