✦ Synopsis


The idea of this special issue was born during two European Conferences of Operational Research: Euro XIII, July 1994 in Glasgow, and Euro XIV, July 1995 in Jerusalem. The selected papers come from these two conferences and from a wide call for papers.

During the 1970s and 1980s, Decision Support Systems (DSS) became a key issue in real management situations introducing a new domain of scientific research. In existing literature numerous topics concerning DSS can be found. However, the need to enhance the potentialities of DSS and to improve their user friendliness requires several methodological innovations. Artificial Intelligence is now sufficiently mature to offer reliable and robust tools, has shown to be a promising field. This special issue aims to present to the DSS community the potentialities of combining Artificial Intelligence tools and techniques with more traditional theoretical procedures for decision aid.

The three main subjects explored in this special issue are: real case applications, software methodologies for the development of such systems and systems designed for group decisions. This classification is not always clear-cut, some papers belong to
