✦ Synopsis

Arnold Berliner, born in Breslau, was awarded a doctor's degree in physics and was employed by the AEG (founded in 1883 by Emil Rathenau), subsequently being in charge of the company's light-bulb factory in Berlin. It was in fact due to personal differences with Emil Rathenau that he was dismissed from the AEG in 1912. During this same year he encouraged Ferdinand Springer, owner of the Springer publishing company, to found a journal whose aim was to report the progress of the natural sciences -pure and applied -in a way understandable to every natural scientist.
