✦ Synopsis
Octave de Malivert sort de Polytechnique. Il est jeune, brillant, élégant mais son caractère étrange inquiète sa mère. Celle-ci l'invite à fréquenter le salon de mandame de Malivert pour le sortir de son isolement. Il y retrouve sa cousine, Armance de Zohiloff. Mais si la «loi d'indemnité» qui vient d'être votée pour indemniser les nobles s'estimant spoliés par la révolution fait d'Octave un parti intéressant, Armance semble rester insensible aux attraits du jeune homme. Octave réalise qu'il est amoureux d'Armance, malgré sa volonté et le serment qu'il s'est fait de ne jamais aimer. Derrière ce comportement étange, il y a le mal d'Octave, condamné au seul amour platonique...
