The tetrahedral form of the ZrCld molecule in the gas phase is already latent in the distorted octahedrons of the crystal structure. Accordingly, the cleavage of the longest Zr-C1 bond with subsequent easy rehybridization at the Zr is assumed to be a plausible vaporization-and sublimation mechanism (cf. [91). ZrBr4 and HfCI4, and probably HfBr4, are isostructural with ( I ) .
