German Coatings Production -first half 2004

Conditions were fairly difficult for the paints and coatings in 2004, with strong rises in raw material prices and declining markets. Despite this, the industry has turned in a worthy performance. The situation will be similar in 2005, but those who prepare well for the anticipated difficulties will cope well. Production of coatings in Germany rose 3.4% in 1H 2004. Production of dispersions, plasters and water-based coatings was up 1.7% at 730,000 tonnes, solvent-based paints were up 2.6% at 276,000 tonnes and production of powder coatings rose 0.2% at 32,438 tonnes. Production of printing inks was up 3.4% at 239,577 tonnes. Life is not a bed of roses for paints and coatings producers at the moment -competition in recent years has been too intense for this. Consolidation in the industry is continuing. In the industrial coatings sector, numerous shifts are taking place but these often only amount to optimising the portfolio. The situation is more difficult in the building coatings sector. The process of change will certainly continue.
