Abstract
The traditional microstrip or coplanar‐waveguide filter design restricts filter structure to regular shapes so that the results may not be optimal. In this paper, we present a novel design approach that allows arbitrary planar structures. This approach combines two powerful and flexible methods: the finite‐element method (FEM) as the three‐dimensional (3D) field simulator and the genetic algorithm (GA) as the optimization engine. In order to reduce the optimization time, parallel computing is also utilized. The FEM‐GA design approach is much more flexible than traditional ones. Numerical examples are presented to show the validity and effectiveness of this approach. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
