✦ Synopsis


This paper 81l11s to estabhsh guidelines for the mmeral content of potable water produced by desalmation. The optimal ranges of TDS, hardness and specifx ionic content are indicated m terms of the avtulable general cnteria and standards. The optimal ranges identified are 200-400 mg/l for TDS, 12-20 French degrees of hardness, 30-150 mg/l chloride, O-100 sodium, 50-75 calcmm, O-10 magnesium, O-0.05 iron and copper, O-200 sulphate, O-35 carbonate. The minunum value for TDS 1s 120 mg/l. Preliminary results of a taste test conducted in Sydney are also reported.
