I read this book as a novice to the methods used in ceramic analyses and was not disappointed. My only research experience with ceramics has been petrographic examination of sherd thin sections. Topics such as ceramic classification, chronology, ethnoarchaeology, and distribution were largely unknown to me.
The first chapter, "Approaches to Archaeological Ceramics," is essentially a short summary of what is covered in the book.
Chapter 2, "Defining Ceramics," covers raw materials, producing a vessel either by hand or with a wheel, decoration and finishes on the vessel and, finally, a simple discussion of firing methods. The chapter closes with an interesting discussion of present
