La reaction d'amplification en chatne (PCR) et I'amplification transcriptionnelle (TMA) sont utilisees en routine pour le diagnostic direct de Mycobacterium tuberculosis, de Chlamydia trachomatis et de Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Les sondes d'hybridation permettent I'identification de bacteries en culture. Les puces & ADN sont des outils prometteurs mais & moyenne echeance. Un nombre croissant de laboratoires utilisent la PCR universelle ARNr 16S & des fins d'identification bacterienne.
