โœฆ Synopsis

The time factor has been used to describe the surface movement process due to underground mining for many years, however, little is known about its physical interpretation and variations with local conditions. To study mining subsidence on the basis of rheology can, more effectively, reveal the nature of this process. With the aid of the viscoelastic theory and the correspondence principle, an important relationship between the time factor and the rheological parameters of the rock mass is established. Based on this new relationship, it will be possible to determine the value of the time factor by means of laboratory or in situ tests.

Some practical examples are employed to compare the values of the time factor determined by mine surveys with those determined by rheological tests. It is worth noticing that the values of the time factor vary with the size of the tested objects. This is, perhaps, the reason why the time factor determined by subsidence surveys is variable for different mining depths.
