✦ Synopsis
Abstract
The silane, PcSi(OH)(OSi(CH~3~)~2~(CH = ~2~)), which has the potential of serving as a new type of coupling agent for fiber glass composites has been studied by UV resonance Raman spectroscopy. This silane is a member of a series of silanes which may lead to hydrolytically stable composites when used as coupling agents. Crystalline samples of the silane without glass and films on E‐glass fibers and high‐surface‐area silica at levels less than a monolayer have been investigated. The Raman line used in these investigations is at 1545 cm^−1^. This line is used because it gives a strong UV resonance Raman enhancement and because its frequency is dependent on the previous history of the sample. An attempt has been made to interpret the nature of the interaction of the silane with the glass surfaces in terms of the shifts of this line.
