Abstract

In this paper, we analyze the characteristic performance of a multiple‐phase‐shift (MPS) distributed feedback (DFB) laser diode based on the transmission line laser model (TLLM) for the first time. The effects of the phase shift position and the value and number of phase shifts on the laser performance have also been analyzed. As expected, the simulation results indicate that the longitudinal field distributions of three‐phase‐shift (3PS) DFB are more uniform than the quarter‐wave shift (QWS) DFB and, hence, the spatial‐hole‐burning effect is significantly reduced in this structure. Also, optimum designs for the 3PS DFB laser diode, based on the flatness of the field distribution, are studied. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
