✦ Synopsis
The box method is a popular ®nite dierence scheme for solving the cable dynamics equations in ocean engineering applications. In this paper, we analyze the shortcomings of the temporal integration de®ned by the box method and propose a new procedure that retains the box method's spatial discretization, but employs the generalized-a method for temporal discretization. The stability and accuracy of the generalized-a method, as applied to the cable dynamics equations, are developed. This analysis procedure demonstrates the formulation of the semi-discrete governing equations using spatial ®nite dierences and the applicability of ampli®cation matrix stability analysis to ®nite dierence problems. An example is presented that demonstrates the robustness of the new approach.

In this paper the direct boundary integral equation method is applied to dynamic fracture mechanics, and the computational results are compared with experimental values. The comparison shows that the authors' computation is successful.
