โฆ Synopsis
Calibrations have been obtained between the crack opening displacement and the hoop stress during the pressurization of 5 in. diameter tubes containing artificially--introduced longitudinal defects. The calibrations have been used to determine an empirical formula for the plane strain fracture toughness, Kic. Critical crack opening displacement values have been measured on small notched bend specimens machined from burst tubes, and by means of the above calibration they have been used to calculate the corresponding tube failure stress.
Good agreement with the experimentally-determined failure stresses indicates that this small scale specimen can be used to predict the behavior of these tubes used in a steam generating heavy water reactor.
