Abstract

Requirements are discussed which must be fulfilled by laboratory and field tests in methane und coal dust before an explosive is permitted for use in mine. Based on results of explosive testing done in recent years in Poland and on results of our continual research, basic differences were found in the ignition ability of methane and coal dust. The differences were also found in laboratory tests using steel mortars which simulate boreholes, and in field tests in underground roadways. With respect to these findings the safety of mining explosives in methane and coal dust and their applicability in the mining practice are discussed.
