✦ Synopsis

Prediction analysis ( P A ) of cross classifications is characterized a8 a method for the analysis of local prediction hypothesee, that is, hypotheses that link particular predictor states to particular states of criteria. To evaluate the succeas of a prediction, P A compares the observed with an expected frequency distribution. The latter is estimated under the assumption of independence between predictors and criteria. When predictors of criteria have ordinal categories, the SUCC~ES of a prediction hypothesis is overestimated if there is a regreasion of the cell frequencies on the ranks of the variable categories. Using the method of log-linear models, i t is shown how ordinal categories can be taken into account in P A . Numerical examples are given from the areas of cognitive development and drug research.

Medical research data are often modelled either by analysis of variance (continuous response variables) or by logistic regression (nominal or ordinal response variables). These methods allow one to eliminate the structural effects among variables which are candidates for an explanation and to measur
