โœฆ Synopsis

The leaves of Rhazya stricta Decaisne are reported' to coutain akuammidine I (= rhazine): and quebrachamine (II),4 one of the major alkaloids of ASD~~OSPSOS auebracho blanco. Recently we had investigated the alkaloids of quebracho bark which led to the discovery of a number of new alka1oids.s It was thus of interest to search other quebrachamine-producing plants for these aspidospermr alkaloids and we therefore extracted a small sample (we had only 11 g. at out disposal) of the leaves of Rhazya stricta and examined the less polar base-fractions.

Gas chFamrtographic separation of the crude alkaloid mixture led to several fractions, the mass spectra of which indicated that there aret in IFartIK.

IN continuation of our studies3 on the alkaloidal constituents of Brazilian Aspidosperma species, we have investigated the stem bark of Aspidosperma album (Vahl) R. Bent., which was collected in Manaus, Amaronas. The non-phenolic portion yielded the lcnown alkaloid4 (-)-quebmchamine, while from the
