The processes of thermal and photo-oxidation of high impact polystyrene have been shown to be closely related. Thermally produced hydroperoxides are directly responsible for subsequent oxidative reactions which occur during u.v. irradiation. Olefinic unsaturation associated with the polybutadiene ph
