โœฆ Synopsis

FT-i.r. studies of acid-demineralized and cation-loaded lignites demonstrate that exchange methods presently being used to determine carboxylic acid groups in coal produce systematic errors. An i.r. method based on intensity measurements of the 1710 cm-' carboxylic acid C=O stretching mode is reported.

The oxidation of Illinois No. 6 coal proceeds readily with ruthenium(VII1) to provide a mixture of aliphatic and aromatic carboxylic acids. The acids were converted into their methyl esters for analysis by g.c.-m.s. and g.c.-FT-i.r. spectroscopy. Mono-, di-, tri-and tetracarboxylic acids are the

The complex lineshape of the X-band EPR spectra of natural coal heated at 300-650 ยฐC was numerically analysed. The experimental spectra were approximated by superpositions of one Gauss and three Lorentz lines. Linewidths ๏œฑH pp , g-factors and abundances of the components of the total spectrum were e
