โœฆ Synopsis

Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy offers considerable advantages over conventional dispersive methods for the characterization of highly absorbing materials such as coal. This technique has been applied to the determination of the functional groups present in three solvent-refined-coal samples, all of which were obtained from the same parent coal but under different processing conditions. Both the benzene-soluble and pyridine-soluble portions are subjected to chromatographic fractionation by sequential elution from a silica-gel column using a specific sequence of solvents. The functional groups present in each fraction were identified from their infrared spectrum, using the groupfrequency approach.
